Logo Educação & Sociedade Revista de Ciência da EducaçãoAll of us are, to some extent, exposed to violence in Brazil. And that’s not hard to see. While reading a newspaper or navigating the internet, we are flooded with news of violence. Tragedies have happened throughout our history, such as the murder of the Congolese, Moïse Kabagambe (LEMOS; FERREIRA, 2022), on January 24, 2022, who was beaten to death for collecting a debt at a kiosk in Rio de Janeiro. Besides, who does not remember the massacre that took place in Suzano, SP (2019), where two gunmen entered a school and executed five students, two school employees just before commiting suicide (DUPLA, 2019). Examples abound when we look for stories of violence across the country.

However, not everyone goes through the same experiences of violence. Wealthier social classes tend to feel its effects less. Gender and race relations also have negative effects on this equation, as does the place of residence. This research provides an overview of the relationship between urban and school violence. An attempt to address this issue is reported by the paper Urban and school violence on the outskirts of Brasília, published in the journal Educação & Sociedade (vol. 43). Drawing on an in-depth literature review, this paper reports a quantitative analysis of violence rates and other demographic information (schooling rates, unemployment, income, etc.), from 2015 to 2019 (SILVA, 2021).

The analysis indicates that school violence cannot be reduced to urban violence. In other words, schools located in neighborhoods with high rates of urban violence (such as homicides, thefts and robberies) will not necessarily present high rates of school violence. However, this dissociation is not complete. For some types of school violence (i.e., crimes against property) the occurrence is higher in regions considered peripheral.

Results point to challenges that must be faced either by universities and governments. Universities should include the topic of school violence in teacher-education courses; governments, on the other hand, are responsible for the effectiveness of educational, social and public security policies. By ignoring the importance of urban and school violence, teacher education hinders the professional development of young teachers who struggle to deal with issues of class, color, gender and identity.
