What are the historical relationships in the Library and Information Sciences in the Brazilian scientific production?

The article entitled “The historical and epistemological relations between Librarianship and Information Science in the Brazilian scientific production” (VIEIRA; KARPINSKI, 2019), published in the  Transinformação (Vol. 31), is about an exploratory study that identifies how and what aspects certifies the historical and epistemological relationship between Librarianship and Information Sciences, based on the areas’ Brazilian scientific production.

By selecting articles that speak about the historical and epistemological aspects of both areas, the study evokes reflections on the concepts and themes common to both areas in the course of its history and highlights the importance on the deepening of theoretical aspects.

With a qualitative and exploratory character, the investigation had as the main technique the bibliographic research. The data based used were: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Library and Information Science Abstracts (Lisa), Web of Science and Scopus.

To comprehend the historic context of the Librarianship and Information Science’s relationship, it was approached briefly both areas’s constitutive process. According to Santos and Rodrigues (2013) Librarianship was, historically, one of the first areas to have information as an object of study. While in the Information Science’s conception, as affirmed by Wersig e Nevelling (1975), it began interdisciplinarily with many sciences assisting its development. Therefore, it’s understood that “epistemological construction of each science is the true backdrop for the development of its discipline and object of study” (VIEIRA; KARPINSKI, 2019, p. 6).

The analysis of the 21 recovered documents under the search terms “Epistemologia”, “História”, “Biblioteconomia” and “Ciência da Informação” shows a tendency on grouping “Epistemologia” theme with Information Science area and the interface of “Estudos históricos” with Librarianship. Discussions on Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine’s documentation, interdisciplinarity and postmodernity in Information Science’s constitution are also identified themes by the analysis on the articles. It has been noticed by analyzing the keywords that the terms “Bibliometria”, Documentação” and “Tecnologia” are terms correlated in the “Biblioteconomia” and “Ciência da Informação” combination.

The study results potentialize the interdisciplinary debate between the Information Sciences areas, especially under the historical and epistemological studies. Besides, they fortify the necessity that more research should be made to provide even more development in this area’s theoretical studies.
