Educação Em Revista is a scientific publication of the Postgraduate Program in Education: Knowledge and Social Inclusion at the Faculty of Education of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). Since 1985, the journal has established itself as a landmark in the Brazilian academic scenario, standing out not only for its excellence and contribution to education research, but also for its important role in disseminating scientific knowledge.

In a context in which many Brazilian journals operate without other institutional support, which leads to possible difficulties in running the editorial office, Educação em Revista maintains its institutional nature. This allows it to have a physical, technological, and personnel structure that ensures it can carry out its scientific knowledge dissemination activities with the utmost quality.

The journal stands out on the national scenario not only for its ranking as Qualis CAPES A1, but also for having a broader scope, which allows researchers from different thematic fields of Education to submit their manuscripts for evaluation.

In line with changes on the national and international scenario, Educação em Revista has reinvented itself over the years. In the 1990s, it began publishing in English. In the 2000s, it migrated to online portals such as SciELO and the Educ@ platform. Around 2010, the journal adopted the continuous publication model, speeding up the scientific dissemination process.

However, technological transformations generate continuous new challenges, which lead Educação em Revista to adapt and improve continuously, looking for strategies to increase its influence and impact. In this sense, the journal’s incorporation into the Open Science policy had a significant impact since it was a national protagonist in this movement. Moreover, Open Science has changed the entire editorial process, representing not only procedural changes to expand the reach of scientific outputs, but also a shift in academic culture.

Open Science values transparency and the democratization of knowledge. It is therefore assumed that the researcher who sets out to write a scientific file will do so in compliance with all the necessary scientific rigors – which generates a broad process of scientific trust, beneficial for the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Bilingual publication is another feature of the journal, which since 2021 has offered all its manuscripts in Portuguese and English. This strategy facilitates the engagement of a broader audience, including researchers, educators, and educational policymakers from different parts of the world, in addition to promoting greater visibility of Brazilian educational research.

Internationalization

The internationalization journey of Educação em Revista is marked by the constant search to expand its network of international collaborations and contributions, and one of its biggest challenges for future actions is to increase the percentage of foreign authors to at least 20% of the total number of articles.

Brazilian publications have sufficient scientific and lay audiences to consume national scientific output. However, the presence of authors from other countries allows for the presentation of other educational contexts and policies, which serve to broaden the debate and the quality of national scientific outputs. This initiative reflects a commitment to enriching the journal with a diversity of perspectives and global expertise.

This ambitious goal requires a multifaceted strategy, which includes strengthening partnerships with renowned academic institutions, participating in international scientific events, as well as adding international names to the journal’s Editorial Committee, with a view to broadening the journal’s international outreach.

Improvement of the Editorial Workflow

Editorial workflows are often major bottlenecks for top-level journals, especially given the number of manuscripts received for evaluation. With the aim of reducing the time it takes to publish manuscripts by at least 20%, the editorial team has been discussing innovative workflow management practices to make the cycle of submitting, analyzing, and publishing manuscripts more dynamic and professional.

The trajectory of Educação em Revista reflects an unwavering commitment to the academic community and society in general. By promoting the dissemination of rigorous and relevant educational research, we have contributed to the formulation of scientifically based educational policies that promote the improvement of pedagogical practices and education in general.

This commitment is reinforced by the continuous search for editorial innovation and fostering a constructive and diverse academic dialogue.

New perspectives

The journal’s path has been marked by challenges, but also by significant achievements. Its journey towards internationalization, the continuous improvement of its editorial and administrative processes, and the ongoing training of its staff are testimony to a vision that transcends national borders, promoting an enriching exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Looking to the future allows us to understand our past, learn from our mistakes and successes and build new paths that will allow us to continuously improve the academic excellence we have built up by Educação em Revista in these almost four decades of existence.
